Born in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, Sara is a Mexican-American who came to the states with her mother at the impressionable age of eight. As a bilingual woman, she has always been proud of her heritage and prefers her first name to be pronounced in the traditional Mexican manner, “Sada.”As a well-trained actress, Sara is a graduate from both the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and Juilliard School in New York City. She first appeared on Broadway in such plays as Paul Simon’s “The Capeman” (1998) and Gershwins’ “Fascinating Rhythm” (1999). Her movie roles include A Class Act and Dreamgirls, both released in 2001.
Playing Dr. Calliope ‘Callie’ Torres on the show has offered her some controversial and provocative moments, specifically when her character in the show started being attracted to other women. While Sara describes this as a matter of female sexual fluidity, especially since the character still has feelings for men, not all fans know what to think.
Sarah realizes that a lot of people want to know one way or the other concerning if her character is lesbian or straight, but the actress seems to enjoy raising the issue that there’s a lot more to sexuality than a simple binary.
